10 more days and counting...

It's almost here.  The day that seemed so far away...it's almost here.

I don't mind the number 30.  It just sounds really weird and surreal that the number 30 will apply to my age.  30 years old.  Very strange.  Don't get me wrong.  I am not upset or depressed.  I am fine with growing older.  It just seems really odd to me to consider the memories I have of "old" adults who were my youth leaders, Sunday school teachers, my teachers in school, etc.-and I realize that these "old" adults were only 30ish.  I am now that same age (ish)  Not seeming so old anymore!  I had similar thoughts when I was going into labor at the hospital pregnant with James.  Is this really happening?  Am I really about to have a baby?  Wow.  Yup...30 is almost here, it's really happening.  No turning back!  Just the other day a college student called me "Mrs. Kathryn"...huh?  In my head...I thought we were sorta peers, ya know.  I mean, I knew I was older...but really, do I look that far apart from you?  I guess so.  Just weird.  I am entering a new stage.  Not sad about it, it's just new to me.

Anyhoo, in pondering what I would like to do for my big new age change birthday, I came across these posts:  38 Acts of Random Kindness  and Kimbirthdey.  It's kinda funny, cause I have never been to these blogs before, nor have I ever heard of them.  It was one of those things where you visit a blog you know, then see a craft you like, and it credits someone, so you drift on over there, then 2 hours later you find yourself 20 blogs removed finding an amazing idea you can use, not ever having searched for it in the first place, but is exactly what you wanted.  (what?  is that wrong?   am I the only one that happens to???)

I am definitely inspired!!!  God has really been teaching me about servanthood and giving of myself for others lately...My focus has been turned to being more others oriented, and less self-centered...and what better way to focus on others is there to use "my" day for others!  I am excited!  So, I need to think of 30 acts of kindness or service to others that I can do on my birthday.   I have already started making a list of what I would like to do.  I know I have a Bible Study that morning to go to, but as soon as it's finished, I am heading out into town and declaring it "Happy Day" for others!  (Btw, when Bella wishes someone Happy Birthday, she says "happy day"...so I am going with it)  I am just smiling ear to ear right now at how fun it will be, not to mention hopefully give others a smile too!   I was thinking about going into Savannah for my project so that I could have a greater chance for running into people out and about...and it works out perfect since we will be going to Masato's for dinner that night.  This plan really is falling into place!!!  Can't wait to blog about it.

So...here's the deal...in honor of my 30th birthday,
I would love for YOU to do a random act of kindness too!
1st annual Happy Day
April 16th, 2010
Then let me know about it.  Leave a comment or blog about it, email me...whatever.  I would love to be able to include all the other kind acts in the "Happy Day" blogpost in addition to my day's events.  That would be awesome.  That would be one big great "Happy Day"!  Can't wait to hear from everyone.

Here's more treasure I found while blog surfing tonight: new quotes to love!

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.  ~Anne Frank

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.  It's not.  ~Dr. Seuss

I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.  ~Mother Teresa

I am only one, but I am one.  I cannot do everything, but I can do something.  And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.  ~Edward Everett Hale

The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.  ~Nelson Henderson

The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was:  "If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?"  But... the good Samaritan reversed the question:  "If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?"  ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

Everybody can be great.  Because anybody can serve.  You don't have to have a college degree to serve.  You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve.... You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve.  You only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love.  ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hi Kathryn--this is Kathy the blogger from your dad's church! I finally found a moment to hop over and visit your blog. I love it! I also love the random acts of kindness that you are doing on your "happy day". I saw where someone had listed Random Acts of Kindness on another blog last week, and thought it was such a nice thing to do. I'll be doing something random and kind...and will let you know what it is--in honor of your 30th birthday. Oh, to be only 30 again--enjoy these years! Blessings, Kathy

Kathryn, Here are my acts of kindness...in honor of your 30th birthday--

Act # 1 Today, I am going to make a $15.00 dollar donation to the "Colby Anderson Fund" (at the bank), in honor of your birthday. Colby lives in Glennville, and was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year. He is currently undergoing treatment in Savannah. So far, he's responding well, but there is a long road ahead of him.

Act #2 I am sending a small gift to Abby Riggs, who is 5 years old and also suffering with leukemia. Abby is the daughter of a semi-famous Christian blogger and author named Brent Riggs. The Riggs family lives in Oklahoma, and I met them over the internet.

I've followed Abby's story for about a year...she's fighting a hard fight, and it's not going well...Abby was adopted by the Riggs family from Guatamala, along with 2 other international children. Brent also has 4 grown children.

I send Abby cards, letters and occasional gifts in an effort to keep her spirits lifted. Sometimes my granddaughter and I color pictures for her and mail them. Abby's in the hospital a lot!

Anyway, Abby's gift will be in honor of your birthday. I will wrap it in birthday paper, and send a card explaining that it is in honor of your birthday. Abby loves Winnie the Pooh, and I'm sending a Winnie the Pooh activity book/crayons.

Thank you for coming up with this unique and kind way to let us help make "30" special. It is my pleasure to help you celebrate in this way. Blessings to you and yours, Kathy in Glennville
